THE city saw slow traffic and some sporadic congestion as vehicles returned to Shenzhen on expressways yesterday, the last day of the May Day holiday.

Some sections like Longgang Tollgate of Huizhou-Yantian Expressway and Dameisha Tunnel of Shenzhen-Yantian No. 2 Passage witnessed congestion.

However, the overall traffic situation on the city’s expressways was good, a source with the police said.

The heaviest traffic flow of returning vehicles was recorded Monday, the fourth day of the holiday, with 410,600 inbound vehicles and 335,100 vehicles leaving the city.

“The returning vehicles had been back to the city Sunday and Monday, so congestion on the last day was not that serious,” Liao Yu, deputy unit chief of Eastern Expressway Brigade of the Shenzhen Municipal Traffic Police Bureau, said in an interview yesterday.

The traffic on roads in the city’s eastern tourist attractions increased by 40 percent Monday compared to the same day last year, police data showed. By 10 p.m. Monday, congestion at the Longgang section of Huizhou-Yantian Expressway ran about 3 kilometers and by 5 p.m. the congestion for westbound vehicles ran about 7 kilometers. The number of inbound vehicles on Meiguan Expressway at its peak was 68,412.

As inter-province tourism has not been resumed yet, vehicle flow to eastern attractions was heavy, causing 4-km congestion at Dameisha Tunnel. Statistics showed the number of vehicles to eastern attractions via Yantian-Baguang Expressway was 41,301, up by 40 percent over the same period last year.

In another development, Shenzhen railway stations saw 535,000 passengers off during the holiday period between April 30 and Monday.

Shenzhen International Airport continued its recovery during the May Day holiday by handling 350,000 travelers in five days. The 120 routes to domestic cities had resumed, taking up 90 percent of the routes before the outbreak of COVID-19.

On the last day of the holiday, the airport saw its peak with 75,000 flights coming in to and leaving the city.
