Measures tightened as more students return to schools

SCHOOLS across the city have adjusted and tightened preventative measures as the second batch of students, including grades 7, 8, 10 and 11 and years 4 to 6 pupils, returned to campus today.

Five passages were set up at Shenzhen Longgang Science and Technology City Foreign Languages School to space out students when their body temperatures were tested.

Stickers were also placed on the ground to remind of social distancing. Only students with a normal temperature (below 37.3 degrees Celsius) can enter the school.

Otherwise, they will be retested and taken to a quarantine room for further observation, according to Yu Xianbo, head of the school’s safety office.

At present, the schools’ year 9 students and teachers are still wearing face masks while having lessons in classrooms.

Lin Lihong, a grade 9 teacher at the school, said that they will continue doing this until further notice. Students also use single person desks to keep a distance from each other.

As more students come back, schools have also designed plans to ensure safe dining.

Due to the limited space of the canteen when practicing social distancing, Meilin Elementary School in Futian District decided to use its classrooms for students to have lunch.

Students are arranged to sit at least one meter away from each other while eating in classrooms. There should be no more than 20 students in each classroom for lunch and break.

At the same time, Meilin Elementary School has added more facilities for students to wash their hands.

“We have been thinking about the position of these facilities in order to provide the most convenience for students,” said Zhang Liangsheng from the general affairs office of Meilin Elementary School.

Several surveys conducted by schools suggested that students in their final year of junior and senior high schools were feeling down after they returned to campus.

Given this, many schools said that they will adjust teaching methods and strengthen psychological assistance for students.

Zhang Lina, principal of Tangjia School in Guangming District suggested that they will conduct lessons in a more diversified way to help students adapt and keep them in good spirits.

Longgang Science and Technology City Foreign Languages School will work with students’ mental health to communicate with those who showed indications of a psychological problem, according to the school’s psychological teacher, Jin Xin.
