ACCORDING to the International Council of Nurses (ICN), at least 90,000 health-care professionals have been infected, and more than 260 nurses have died around the world. There are over 3.8 million registered nurses in the United States alone. At least 79 nurses have died from the coronavirus, according to the American Nurses Association. U.S. hospitals are reporting a shortage of key medical supplies, including ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE). Some states have been unable to get enough PPE to protect nurses and doctors. Health-care workers across the country have organized protests over their working conditions and have been asking for more PPE to help them battle the pandemic. A survey conducted by GetUsPPE.org showed 12 percent of the 120 participating institutions in California had no N95 masks left. May 12 is International Nurses Day and the 200th anniversary of the birth of famed British nurse Florence Nightingale. This year’s theme chosen by the International Council of Nurses is “Nursing the World to Health.” (CGTN) |
