Bureau denies soaring divorce cases
    2020-05-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE total number of both marriage and divorce registrations in April was not considerably higher than a year ago, even though some citizens complained about waiting a month to get a divorce registration, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

Some media reports have said the number of divorce cases has soared this year.

Shenzhen Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau said the number of marriage registrations was 4,186 and divorce registrations was 3,524 in April, compared with the figure of 3,729 and 3,494, respectively, of April last year.

The figures from January to April this year in fact saw a decline compared to the same period last year, the bureau said. The number of marriage registrations was 21,272 and divorce registrations was 10,622 from January to April last year, while the number was 14,812 and 8,685, respectively, for the first four months of this year.

“Citizens had to book online in advance for both marriage and divorce registrations due to safety considerations during the COVID-19 outbreak,” a staff member with the city’s civil affairs bureau said, adding that “with the conditions slightly eased in April, we increased the number of registrations available in an orderly fashion, and the amount has reached the same as the one last year.”

However, some citizens did not attend the registration after successfully making an appointment online, which caused a considerable waste of public resources. Staff of the city’s marriage registration offices remind citizens to cancel their online booking in time to facilitate other people’s successful appointments.

Citizens can go directly to a marriage registration office to have an onsite booking if online appointments are unavailable.
