Youths pursue dreams in innovation zone
    2020-05-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. To mark the occasion, starting today we will publish a series of reports celebrating the city’s achievements in different aspects over the past four decades.

THE Shenzhen-Hong Kong Technology Innovation Zone is bustling with activity as young entrepreneurs from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao embark on their startup projects with full enthusiasm, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported Monday.

The 303.8-meter-tall Changfu Jinmao Building, located in Futian District, is the highest building located within the innovation zone. In this building, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Workshop is abuzz with innovative ideas and ingenious inventions.

Sam Ho, a Hong Kong citizen, is the CEO of Shutang Information Technology (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd., a company dedicated to the research and development of non-invasive monitoring technologies.

The company is currently debugging a blood glucose monitor that looks like a smart watch. Adopting the latest spectrum technology and ECG technology, the monitor can quickly transmit glycemic index readings to a mobile phone through Bluetooth.

“We will deliver a total of 15,000 monitors to our mercantile agents in Hunan and Hainan provinces as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region this August,” Ho told the Daily.

SpeechX Ltd. is another company founded by Hong Kong researchers in the workshop. Its team members mainly come from the human-computer communications laboratory in the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

“Our team has grown from less than 10 people at the beginning to more than 50 now, becoming one of the firms with the largest number of employees in the workshop,” Lifa Sun, founder of the company, was quoted as saying.

SpeechX’s main business is online English education. It developed a technology targeting English pronunciation correction and has teamed up with a number of renowned online education platforms.

“I hope more children in poverty-stricken areas can enjoy low-cost and high-quality online English education,” Sun said.

Deng Xiaokun, head of the workshop, said one of his key tasks is to help companies expand office space as they continue to grow.

According to Deng, in less than two years, 25 entrepreneurial teams have settled in the workshop, and the total number of team members has grown from the first batch of 49 to more than 300 today.

The growth of companies is inseparable from a good entrepreneurial environment and the support from the government.

In order to boost the transformation of high-end scientific and technological achievements, Futian has recently rolled out a slew of supportive policies for high-tech companies, according to Huang Wei, head of Futian District.

As of the end of this April, the innovation zone had introduced 102 sci-tech projects involved in a variety of fields such as artificial intelligence, life sciences and materials science.
