THE second round of heavy rain with strong wind is expected to hit the city early this morning after the strongest heavy rain so far this year had pounded the city yesterday.

The heavy rain, even torrential rain in some places, that started at around 7:15 a.m. yesterday had forced Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory to issue a red alert in the city’s eastern areas including Dapeng, Yantian and Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone.

An orange alert was issued in the other eastern districts like Luohu, Pingshan and Longgang.

Nan’ao Observatory Station recorded 289 millimeters of rainfall in three hours, the heaviest in Guangdong Province. The city’s average rainfall was 71.8 millimeters, data from Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory showed.

“This round of rainfall is typical precipitation caused by monsoon. The strong precipitation generally appears in the places where the monsoons meet. It is hard to predict due to its uncertainty,” Wang Ming-jie, chief weather forecaster with Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory, said at an interview yesterday.

The observatory canceled an alert for heavy rain by 11:14 a.m. yesterday. Sources from the city’s flood control and disaster relief headquarters showed there were neither casualties nor major damage reported by 11:30 a.m.

There are three typical weather conditions in South China during the Dragon Boat Rain season, the month with intense and strong rainfall around the Dragon Boat Festival, according to Wang.

The other two types are either caused by cold air, or caused by cold air and monsoon combined.

A mudslide caused by torrential rain in Hezhou, Guangxi halted or delayed 15 pairs of trains on the Guiyang-Guangzhou High-speed Railway. The affected trains included G2929 between Guiyang and Shenzhen and G319 between Chongqing and Shenzhen, sources from Shenzhen North Railway Station said.

There are nine pairs of trains running between Shenzhen, Guilin, Nanning, Beihai, Guiyang, Chongqing and Kunming on the Guiyang-Guangzhou rail line.

The rail service resumed at 2:20 p.m. yesterday.
