Ronaldo breaks yet another record
    2020-06-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CRISTIANO RONALDO has continued to shatter the record books after his goal in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Bologna on Monday saw him become the leading Portuguese scorer in Serie A history.

The 35-year-old had struggled for form since the return of football, and was unable to prevent his side slumping to a loss to Napoli in the Coppa Italia final last week.

His manager Maurizio Sarri admitted after the game that Ronaldo was “lacking sharpness,” while former Italy striker Luca Toni also hit out at his efforts, saying: “You expect a big performance from him but he looked like he was experiencing physical difficulties — he couldn’t even dribble a man.”

But the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was back amongst the goals against Bologna after his cool first-half penalty set Juve on their way to a comfortable victory, which saw them move four points clear at the top of the table.

There was another personal landmark for Ronaldo to celebrate too, with his strike the 43rd he has netted in Serie A since joining the club, one more than the 42 his compatriot Rui Costa managed in the eight years he spent at Fiorentina and Milan between 1994-2006.

The goal was his 22nd in the Serie A this season, although he is still five behind the current top scorer Ciro Immobile, who has bagged a hugely impressive 27 goals for Lazio.

Ronaldo is already the top-scoring Portuguese player in Premier League history following his 84 goals for Manchester United, and he also comfortably holds the record in La Liga after his staggering 311 goals in 292 appearances for Real Madrid.

He and Juventus will be back in action Friday night to take on Lecce, but in the meantime they will be hoping Atalanta can do them a favor in the title race as they host second-placed Lazio on Wednesday.(SD-Agencies)
