Guanzhou Opera House puts ‘Marco Polo’ online
    2020-06-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Guanzhou Opera House will stage three nights of Chinese opera “Marco Polo” this weekend, and audience members who cannot make their visit to Guangzhou can watch the show online at 7:30 p.m. June 25. Tickets are 6-12 yuan.

Produced by the opera house, “Marco Polo” took three years to finish and it was a big success when it was debuted in 2018 in Guangzhou. It is based on the story of the Venetian explorer who traveled along the ancient Silk Road in the 13th century.

Set in the late Song Dynasty (960-1279), the play unfolds Marco Polo’s epic adventure to the East as well as his touching romance with a Chinese woman named Chuanyun.

German composer Enjott Schneider said that he used traditional Chinese instruments to add an Eastern touch into the Western story-telling style, including the erhu (a two-stringed bowed instrument), Chinese flute (dizi), and pipa (a four-stringed lute-like instrument). The show’s music will be performed by the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Tang Muhai.
