Poly Theater adds more exciting online shows
    2020-06-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Beijing Poly Theater Management Co., which manages 65 performing theaters around the country including the Shenzhen Poly Theater and the Pingshan Theater, has posted online free videos of past performances to tide fans over during the closure of the theaters since March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Recent updates include the English play “Red,” the modern dance show “The Planets,” a Video Games Live show, flamenco “Blood Wedding,” and the ballet “The Firebird.”

Award-winning stage and screen actor Alfred Molina reprises his critically acclaimed performance as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko in playwright John Logan’s Tony Award-winning 2010 play “Red.” Under the watchful gaze of his young assistant and the growing competitive presence of a new generation of artists, Rothko takes on his greatest career challenge yet to create a definitive series of paintings for the Philip Johnson-designed Four Seasons restaurant in architect Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Seagram Building.

Molina is joined by rising star Alfred Enoch as Rothko’s assistant Ken. The original Broadway director Michael Grandage returns to direct this 2018 West End revival, the first U.K. production since the play’s 2009 world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse.

A spectacular ice fantasia featuring the Olympic skating champions Paul and Isabelle Duchesnay and former world champion Brian Orser, the dance show “The Planets” is presented by the Toronto Dance Theater with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra playing the music of the symphonic masterpiece by Gustav Holst. This dazzling production incorporates solo and ensemble ice dancing, precision group skating and synchronized swimming.

Video Games Live is an award-winning immersive concert event featuring music from the most popular video games of all time. Created, produced and hosted by world renowned game industry veteran and superstar Tommy Tallarico, top orchestras and choruses from around the world perform along with exclusive synchronized video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, well known solo performers, electronic percussion, live action and unique interactive segments to create an explosive one-of-a-kind entertainment experience.

The show posted by the Poly Theater is performed by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra with Eimear Noone as the conductor.

Teatro Real’s “Blood Wedding,” choreographed by Antonio Gades in 1974, depicts the story written by Federico Garcia Lorca of a bride who, on her wedding night, runs away with her former lover, now a married man with a child of his own. The furious groom follows them, and a fight to the death ensues between the two men. The dance show is the essence of the work of Lorca, a poet and playwright whose vision here melded with that of a profound and ancient Spain.

“The Firebird” is an exciting dance special based on the mystical Russian folk tale of enchantment and love, set to Stravinskys fantastical ballet score. This adaptation of James Kudelkas masterpiece for the stage combines classical ballet with magical visual effects. Kudelkas’ choreography is by turns elegant and virtuosic, but always passionate and musically evocative. “The Firebird” features the top dancers from the internationally renowned National Ballet of Canada, including the great Greta Hodgkinson (nominated for the Prix Benois de la Danse in 2000) in the main role, Aleksandar Antonijevic as Prince Ivan, Rebekah Rimsay as Princess Vasilisa, and the unforgettable Rex Harrington as Kastchei the Demon. Conductor Valery Gergiev leads The Kirov Orchestra in the performance of the music.(SD News)
