Nominations open for science awards
    2020-07-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Nominations have officially opened for the 2020 Guangdong Science and Technology Awards, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported Thursday.

Winning projects of Shenzhen Science and Technology Awards will receive priority in the nominations. Meanwhile, scientific achievements that have played an important role in the fight against COVID-19 will also enjoy preferential treatment, said the city’s science, technology and innovation commission.

The Guangdong Science and Technology Awards were established to cover outstanding scientific contributions, natural sciences, technical inventions, scientific and technological progress, and cooperation in science and technology.

Scientists who have been engaged in the field of independent innovation for a long time in Guangdong Province, and have made significant contributions to the province’s innovation-driven development will be nominated for the Outstanding Contribution Award. The potential nominees should be working in the province.

The Natural Sciences Award mainly nominates individuals who have clarified natural phenomena, characteristics and laws, and have made major scientific discoveries in basic research and applied basic research.

Foreign researchers who have worked in Guangdong for no less than four consecutive years, and engaged in scientific and technological research and development in the province for no less than six months each year may also be nominated for the Natural Sciences Award.

Individuals who have made major technical inventions with authorized patents will be nominated for the Technical Inventions Award.

Individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the scientific and technological progress as well as economic and social development of Guangdong Province will have a chance to compete for the Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

The Science and Technology Cooperation Award mainly looks for nonlocal nominees who have made important contributions to the science and technology undertakings of Guangdong.

A total of 41 projects from Shenzhen won the 2019 Guangdong Science and Technology Awards, which were unveiled March 25 this year, according to the Daily. The 41 projects accounted for 22.9 percent of the total winning projects, a record high in the past 10 years.
