Blue Note China to post two shows on Youku
    2020-07-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Blue Note China will post two past shows by Cory Henry and Kazumi Watanabe this weekend on the Youku app. Fans can watch Henry’s show at 8 p.m. Friday and Watanabe’s show at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Henry is a U.S. R&B and soul singer-songwriter, pianist, organist and music producer. Being a former member of Snarky Puppy, Henry has won three Grammy Awards and earned a spot on the proverbial 1960s band Mount Rushmore, among the greats who play contemporary keys. Henry began touring in 2006 with great figures such as Bruce Springsteen, Michael McDonald, Kenny Garrett and The Roots and recorded two albums as the main artist, which were highly valued by critics and fans of jazz and gospel, his two great influences.

A more recent endeavor was the flaming hot Cory Henry and The Funk Apostles — a blend of funk, gospel, and jazz that sent limbs flailing. In 2018, they released the album “Art of Love,” which shows, in a way, the impressive power that the band has when performing live. A group as complete as this one had not appeared for years, with fantastic voices, instrumentalists with hypnotic solos, a kind of Sly & The Family Stone of the 21st century.

Watanabe is a Japanese guitarist. In 1979, he formed a jazz rock band with some of Japan’s leading studio musicians, and recorded the album “Kylyn.” A technically adept guitarist with a dynamic, highly inventive, jazz fusion-based sound, Watanabe is one of Japan’s most prolific and recognizable instrumentalists. Although primarily focused on jazz, Watanabe has left his mark on such varied genres as hard rock, electronic pop and ambient classical music.
