B: No. I plan to stay here for an internship. I don’t really want to go home. My mom is the queen of throwing shade. For instance, she loves to say, “Is that really what you’re going to wear?”

Note: “Shade” is a subtle, sneering expression of contempt for or disgust with someone - sometimes verbal, and sometimes not. Therefore, “to throw shade” means “to subtly issue insults or expressions of disapproval.” The expression began to enter the mainstream in the early 1990s, appearing in U.S. newspapers, but it exploded in popularity after recaps of a 2010 episode of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” used the phrase to describe a competition of epic takedowns.
