High street 商业街
    2020-08-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A: There’s a new Italian restaurant opening on the high street. Would you like to try it out with me some time next week?

B: I’m not sure. Although restaurants and shopping malls have reopened after the COVID-19 lockdown, I still feel a bit uncomfortable about dining out.

Note: A high street is the main commercial and retail street in a town. In big cities, each neighborhood or district will probably have its own high street. “High” in this phrase means “principle, main.” The name seems to have emerged in the 12th century when the word “high” began to be used to indicate something or someone of a higher, or more important, status than others. High Street fashion describes mass-market retail style — the sort of clothing you will find in the chain stores.
