A BRITISH couple won a life-changing £1 million (US$1.3 million) in a Lotto draw just one day after the husband was made redundant at work and weeks after they lost a loved one to coronavirus in a double tragedy. Wood machinist David Adams, 61, and his wife Shelley were going through an incredibly difficult and painful time when their luck changed and they scooped the seven-figure prize online. David lost his job just 24 hours earlier, and Shelley, 52, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last year, forcing her to give up her job as a community carer. The couple, from Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, was hit by a double tragedy this year when David’s sister-in-law died after suffering a massive heart attack, and her husband — David’s brother — lost his battle with COVID-19. The Adams have tried to stay positive despite the setbacks in life. Now, they are making plans for their windfall, starting with a new car — a Nissan Qashqai — to replace their aging car. It will eventually be followed by David’s first holiday outside of the U.K. David discovered the couple’s big win when he checked their numbers in the morning of Aug. 2 — and he rushed into his bedroom to give his bleary-eyed wife the thrilling news, although she admitted she wasn’t so happy at first. As David showed her the winning numbers on his mobile phone, she realized they had struck it big. She burst into her son’s bedroom to ask him to double check the numbers. David and Shelley have been cautious in their celebrations and it has taken some time to come to terms with the magnitude of their win.(SD-Agencies) |
