Nantou Ancient Town revived with exhibitions, dining, shopping

A 330-meter-long street inside the 1,700-year-old Nantou Ancient Town in Nanshan District has been renovated recently with various historical, art and design exhibitions. When walking in the oldest part of Shenzhen, it’s great to see local life, take photos and indulge in snacks.

Historical exhibitions

Nantou 1820 | Nantou Digital Pavilion

With two digital exhibitions on the economic development and social customs of Nantou in ancient times, Nantou 1820 | Nantou Digital Pavilion offers visitors an opportunity to experience the history of the ancient town in an immersive way.

Dates: Until Dec. 30

Hours: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Stories of Boards Hall

The exhibition at the Stories of Boards Hall features a collection of wooden boards from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, including signboards, boards that record the achievements one made at an imperial examination, and family signs hung over the gate of a residence.

Dates: Until Dec. 31

Hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Venue: Stories of Board Hall, NT97 (NT97牌匾故事馆)

Cultural relics exhibitions

Two exhibitions are being held to showcase cultural relics unearthed in the ancient town as over 10,000 cultural relics have been found here. Visitors can also find a porcelain exhibition that tells Nantou’s stories of marine trades during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

‘Diverse Homology’

The exhibition explores the cultural source of the Pearl River Estuary area from four perspectives. It is an exhibition without any exhibits as the exhibition itself works as a giant exhibit. When visitors walk into the exhibition hall, they naturally become part of the exhibition.

‘Nantou Odyssey’

“Nantou Odyssey” exemplifies the significance of bringing modern spaces, businesses and lifestyles into the Nantou Ancient Town while maintaining its historical culture.

Dates: Until Dec. 30

Hours: 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Venue: Re-Gallery | Info Center (南头新生场 | 综合服务中心)

There are also exhibitions at Dongguan Guildhall (东莞会馆) and the Xin’an County Government Office (新安县衙). Dongguan Guildhall was built in 1868 for Dongguan merchants and the exhibition showcases the history of markets and shops in the Qing Dynasty. The Xin’an County Government Office is a reproduction of the original that operated from the Ming Dynasty to the early 20th century.

Art and design exhibitions

‘The Fusion of Design — Design • Community • City’

Featuring designs by established artists, local designers and illustrators, the exhibition demonstrates how contemporary generations of urban residents interpret their understanding of urban life.

‘Crafting the Future: New Value of Tradition’

The exhibition redefines traditional crafts with an array of modern designs and inspires new understandings about traditions and how they can fit into the future.

‘Landscape Meets Calligraphy: Paintings by Kang Tai-keung’

The exhibition demonstrates Hong Kong designer Kang Tai-keung’s successful efforts on blending ink paintings and calligraphy with graphic designs.

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

‘Freeman Lau & Poster Design: Inter-Dependent Decisions’

Presenting posters designed by Hong Kong designer Freeman Lau in the past 40 years, the exhibition brings visitors into Lau’s designing world from different perspectives.

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

‘Bauhaus 19192019’

Works on display are a series of chairs created by Freeman Lau to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus in 2019. Inspirations came from basic elements in graphic design, such as circles, squares and triangles.

‘The Adventurous Waste Hunt’

With creative illustrations, toys and interactive games on display, the exhibition invites the visitors to a joyful exploration of waste classification.

‘TTXS: Crossing the Cross-over Exhibition’

“TTXS: Crossing the Cross-over Exhibition” is an exhibition of caricatures and sculptures by Hong Kong designer Danny Yung from the 1970s as well as works contributed by artists and creators from other professionals.

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

‘Tattooed Chair’

A collaboration between No Art No Fun and Hong Kong artists, the exhibition aims to bring a new life to the “Tattooed Chair” series originally designed by renowned Finnish designer Yrjo Kukkapuro.

No Art No Fun pop-up shop

Visitors can find 29 graphic designs by 19 Hong Kong designers and their merchandise.

Exhibition of Nexxt works

Nexxt is a project in which Hong Kong and mainland designers work together to create original designs in pairs. Wonderful designs from the project are on display at the exhibition.

Illustrations

As the only museum that focuses on illustrations and research in China, the Illustration Museum has a rich collection of illustrations from China and the rest of the world.

‘Memories With the Ancient Town’

The exhibition adopts the form of a convenience store themed wonderful life in Nantou Ancient Town to help visitors get a better understanding of the history of the ancient town.

There are also food and beverage businesses, unique retailers and cultural and creative stores along the street for leisure and entertainment.
