THREE key laboratories from Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) will receive a total of 15 million yuan (US$2.22 million) of funds for starting up, a list of key laboratories for construction in 2021 released by the Shenzhen Municipal Science, Technology and Innovation Commission on Friday showed.

The three key laboratories will conduct research in material surface and interface, energy chemistry and natural gas hydrate.

According to the regulation on construction and management of key laboratories unveiled in July this year, the commission can arrange special funds for the construction and establishing of laboratories. The subsidy for a single laboratory is no more than 5 million yuan. For the laboratories in enterprises, the subsidy is no greater than 50 percent of the budget.

Statistics show that Shenzhen has 12 institutes for basic research, 11 laboratories named after Nobel laureates, 46 provincial-level new-type research institutes and 2,642 innovation carriers of different types. It participated in, or jointly hosted, four provincial laboratories and established six State-level key laboratories including the State Wireless Communication Access Technology Lab (Huawei), the State Oncochemical Genomics Lab, 36 State-level engineering laboratories and 13 State-level engineering technology research centers.
