Checks on holiday driving violations to be tightened
    2020-09-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN traffic police will tighten the response to traffic violations, especially focusing on driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), with the onset of National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays.

The move is to curb traffic accidents and risks during the holidays.

Shenzhen traffic police said they caught 163 DUI driving cases in the first 13 days of September and handled 45 traffic accident cases involving drunk driving, an increase of 7.14 percent over the same period last year, and up 9.76 percent compared with the previous month. Accidents related to drunk driving happened most often around 10 p.m. and also around 2 a.m., and were located most often in Bao’an and Longgang districts.

Police data showed 90 percent of such accidents happened between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. the following day, and most of them were collisions with other vehicles.

Around 62 percent of the drunk drivers drank at restaurants, 22 percent drank at home or in the office and some drank at KTVs.

In ages, most drivers range between 20-30 years old.

To curb drunk driving, police will post reminders, play video clips at road sections near hotels, bars and parking lots, tighten checks after dining hours and hold publicity activities in urban villages and communities on preventing DUI driving.

Police will deploy more officers to conduct checks for violators at targeted hours and in key places during the holidays. (Han Ximin)
