104-year-old woman walking a marathon
    2020-10-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 104-YEAR-OLD woman is walking the length of a marathon for charity. Ruth Saunders started her challenge on Sept. 8, walking around the block. She is expected to reach the marathon distance in November.

The money Saunders raises is going to Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA).

Speaking to BBC News Saunders said, “I usually do something for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance every year, and this year I can’t have a coffee morning or anything like that. I said to my son ‘I’m fed up, all through the lockdown I have never been outside my gate... I’m going for a little walk around the block.”’

“So I did and while I was going round I thought what am I doing this for? I know. Thames Valley Air Ambulance. So that’s how I started raising money for them.”

Saunders is said to have been inspired by the efforts of Captain Tom, who captured the hearts of the nation when he walked 100 laps of his garden for his 100th birthday, raising money for the NHS.
