Hi-speed trains to meet Double 11 demand
    2020-11-12  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

GUANGZHOU Railway Group Corp. has launched a “high-speed rail + logistics” project to enhance the supply of bulk express delivery capacity and meet the cargo peak of the Double 11 Shopping Festival.

This year’s duration of the shopping festival has been advanced and extended by starting the shopping spree from Nov. 1. The high sales volume of the shopping festival has led to huge express delivery demand.

Statistics from Shenzhen North Railway Station show that between Nov. 1 and 10, Guangzhou Railway Group Corp., in cooperation with China Railway Express Co. Ltd., had operated about 200 high-speed passenger trains a day to transport goods for the festival and had delivered a total of 270,000 packages weighing 597 tons, up by 241 percent over the same period last year,

Guangzhou Railway Group Corp. has reserved 15 high-speed trains for freight service only

Between the big cities that need at least a one-hour trip, the operator sends at least three trains a day, carrying 800 packages of 10,000 kilograms, to meet the logistics demand.

Starting Oct. 18, the operator has operated three express train services a day between Guangzhou and Hangzhou, carrying household appliances, food, garments, auto parts, electronic products and equipment.

In addition to further enhancing  the freight-handling capacity of three major stations, namely Guangzhou South Railway Station, Shenzhen North Railway Station and Changsha South Railway Station, Guangzhou Railway Group Corp. also told 35 stations including Shenzhen, Changsha, Guangzhou, Huaihua and Shaoyang to provide cargo delivery services for 300 passenger trains that will stop off at the stations. A newly developed cold-chain delivery system is also used for the delivery of food and special medicine, according to the railway operator.

The delivery rush of the festival is expected to last until Nov. 20. Data shows that over 187 million packages were delivered between Nov. 11 and 16 last year. The number of packages handled on Nov. 11 was three times that of an ordinary day in 2019.
