‘Golf Town’ gains momentum with professional show

A GOLF show combining products exhibition and tournaments, organized by the Tangxia Township Government in Dongguan, kicked off at Mission Hills Dongguan yesterday.

More than 100 brands of various golf products were on offer at the show and 20 golf tournaments will be held during the seven-day gala that ends Sunday.

Tangxia, a town in Guangdong’s Dongguan city, has been dubbed as China’s “Golf Town” for its golf products industry cluster. Ye Huiming, head of the Tangxia Township Government, said at the opening ceremony that the town boasts more than 140 enterprises in golf products manufacturing, research and development. Tangxia was named as a sports demonstration base by Guangdong Provincial Government last year.

The township government initiated a scheme in 2014 to popularize golf among students — by creating golf classes in public schools and attracting more than 10,000 students, Ye said. The Tangxia Teenagers’ Golf Team, with members chosen from the students, won the title of national teenager PGA tournament this year.

The township’s golf industry brought in 1.94 billion yuan (US$296 million) in the first 10 months this year, a year on year increase of 7.5 percent. Organizers said most golf enterprises in town suffered a lot in the first four months of the year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but have witnessed a steady recovery since May and even a sharp increase since August.

Many international buyers turned to the town as golf enterprises in other nations are still suffering from the pandemic but enterprises here regained momentum with the pandemic under control.

This year’s golf show is the 12th edition since its inauguration in 2009. It is expected to attract more than 40,000 visitors this year.
