Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint sees surge of returning HK residents
    2020-11-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

BY 6 p.m. Monday, Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint saw a total of 1,810 people return to Hong Kong from Guangdong and Macao under “Return2hk” travel program on the first day of implementing the rule.

The entry service to Hong Kong started at 10 a.m. and the checkpoint soon saw a surge of Hong Kong residents returning to the territory, with the line of returnees extending to the entrance of the Departure Hall.

An 87-year-old grandmother Wang, who lived in her relative’s home in Shenzhen for months due to the outbreak of COVID-19, was happy to go back to Hong Kong.

She was accompanied by border police officers to the border and was picked up by her son on the Hong Kong side.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government launched the “Return2hk” travel program, which allows Hong Kong residents returning from neighboring Guangdong Province or the Macao Special Administrative Region to be exempted from a 14-day quarantine on meeting certain requirements, including possession of proof of a valid negative nucleic acid test result issued by recognized institutions upon arrival in Hong Kong.

In the initial stage, a daily quota of 5,000 has been set, including 3,000 for the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint and 2,000 for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Checkpoint.

Statistics from the HKSAR government showed that by 6 p.m. Monday, a total of 1,810 people returned to Hong Kong through the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint and 330 people from the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Checkpoint.

The Hong Kong residents who plan to return can make reservations for the following week from Wednesday to Friday. An adult above the age of 18 can make reservations for at most three companions who are also Hong Kong residents.

The Hong Kong immigration department reminds everyone that those who are rejected from entering for failing the requirements have to go under a 14-day quarantine after they are sent back to Shenzhen. Those living in Hong Kong who want to go to the mainland need to provide a negative nucleic acid test report issued within 24 hours by mutually recognized medical institutions in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province, and go through a 14-day quarantine after entering the mainland. Otherwise they will be denied any entry.
