WALMART will open a Sam’s Club flagship in Qianhai, attracted by the fast development of the free trade area and its position as one of the growth drivers of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The plans were revealed at a signing ceremony between the Qianhai authority and Walmart in Qianhai on Thursday.

Huang Min, secretary of the Party committee of the Qianhai authority, Andrew Miles, president of Sam’s Club China, other officials with the Shenzhen Municipal Government and the Qianhai authority and executives of Walmart China attended the ceremony.

The Qianhai Sam’s Club flagship, reported to be the largest of all Sam’s Club stores around the world, is a strategic move by Walmart China for sustainable growth, said Miles.

He thanked all the efforts and services that the Qianhai authority has provided for the settlement of the flagship in Qianhai.

“The development that is happening in Qianhai and the investment that is going into this area give us great confidence in Qianhai to be a really great place for the Greater Bay Area flagship club for Sam’s in Shenzhen’s drive to become an international consumption center,” said Miles.

Huang expressed gratitude to the economic contribution by Walmart to Shenzhen’s development and said it is an ideal time to open the Sam’s Club flagship in Qianhai, which is in the process of building a new urban center for the Greater Bay Area. He pledged better services for the flagship in Qianhai.

The location of the flagship store and its opening day are not yet disclosed.

Walmart has topped the Fortune 500 list for seven consecutive years since 2014. It opened its first store on the Chinese mainland in Shenzhen in 1996 and is now operating more than 170 stores in China.

Walmart China reported a 2.6-percent growth in the first three quarters of this year from the same period of 2019 despite the global COVID-19 pandemic.
