Designs of SZ tech museum unveiled
    2020-12-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

ZAHA Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, the winners of Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum International Design Contest, recently unveiled the designs for the future tech museum that is under construction in Guangming District.

A landmark building that intends to showcase the city’s strength and global position as a center of innovation and technology, the museum covers an area of 125,000 square meters and will work in partnership with a range of universities, schools and innovation centers, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The 2.1-billion-yuan (US$320 million) project is divided into seven functional areas including a display area, science movie area, innovation area, exchange area, and public service and business administration area.

The construction of the facility comprises a sequence of interconnecting public spaces, galleries, and educational facilities centered around an atrium.

Incorporating maximum adaptability as a basic design principle, the geometries, proportions and spatial experience of each gallery will offer visitors a rich and varied experience each time they visit.

The museum has been planned as a benchmark for sustainability within the region’s civic architecture. ZHA has added detailed computer modeling and wind tunnel testing for extensive analysis of thermal performance, natural lighting, and air quality to maximize the effectiveness of the building’s envelope in reducing energy consumption, while ensuring visitor comfort.

The design optimizes energy conservation during the city’s hot, humid summer with the very high thermal insulation performance of its envelope together with high-efficiency glazing, lighting and smart building management systems.

The museum’s procurement, full life-cycle performance, and adaptability for future configuration are also evaluated and assessed to reduce embodied carbon and achieve the highest three-star rating of China’s green building evaluation standard.

Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum is one of the city’s 10 new cultural landmarks. It is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
