THE Shenzhen Municipal Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau has imposed fines totaling more than 311,500 yuan (US$47,550) in 3,995 instances over garbage sorting irregularities among citizens as of Dec. 10, according to the bureau.

In addition, five organizations were fined a total of 300,000 yuan for violating garbage sorting regulations since Oct. 9, when the city began to impose penalties on such irregularities.

Law enforcement officers with Xin’an Subdistrict in Bao’an District recently issued a fine of 200 yuan to a man surnamed Wang who was not disposing of kitchen waste as required during an inspection.

Another man living in Baolongyuan in Donghu Subdistrict in Luohu District was also fined 200 yuan recently for not sorting recyclable wastes correctly.

According to the city’s garbage sorting regulation, residents will be fined up to 200 yuan in the most serious circumstances, for example, if residents are found discarding garbage randomly, failing to complete social activities in the set times to offset penalties or repeating illegal behaviors.

The regulation requires residents to sort kitchen waste and drop them into kitchen waste bins during designated times. If residents use plastic bags to hold kitchen waste, they should also throw plastic bags to the bins for other waste after dumping kitchen waste.

Shenzhen officially implemented garbage sorting regulations Sept. 1. So far, the authority has handed out 4,282 fines totaling some 1.27 million yuan over garbage-sorting violations to residents, residential communities, garbage treatment enterprises and more.
