THE Shenzhen National Center for Applied Mathematics, one of the first batch of 13 national mathematics centers in China, was officially inaugurated at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) on Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the university.

The city’s first national mathematics center and first State-level research platform ever approved for construction by SUSTech, it will be hosted by SUSTech and jointly built by Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and China Electronics Technology Group Corp.

Xue Qikun, president of SUSTech, has been hired as director of the management committee of the Shenzhen National Center for Applied Mathematics, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The center will place its research focus on the application of mathematical disciplines and key technical issues that meet the major national strategic needs while supporting the industrial innovation of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Shenzhen’s construction of a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

In the future, it will put effort on four core fields including Internet information, precision medicine, fintech and digital economy, and develop research on supercomputing and fast algorithm through cooperation with Huawei, Tencent, Mindray and BGI.

The center aims to make breakthroughs in key applied mathematics technologies, and become a center of applied technologies integrating talent cultivation, science research and industrial services, according to the Daily report.
