Holiday drives up labor demand
    2021-02-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN-BASED SF Express, a delivery company, has hired 1,700 new workers to meet the business boom triggered by rising online spending before and during the Spring Festival holiday.

A total of 17,000 delivery persons working for the company in Shenzhen are currently on duty to ensure the timely delivery of holiday goods.

The company recently unveiled incentives to encourage employees to spend their holidays locally in Shenzhen by offering food, cash gifts and cold prevention products. In additional to free family reunion dinners for New Year’s Eve and subsidies, the outlets of the company will arrange various activities and an extra, special leave after the festival.

Between Jan. 22 and Feb. 10, the company will charge an additional fee of 0.5 yuan per kilogram for heavy parcels that are over 20 kg. Between Feb. 11 and 17, the Spring Festival holiday period, it will charge an additional 10 yuan per parcel for those delivered between major cities.

The demand for house-keeping services during the holiday is also on the rise.

“The orders for household service have increased by 50 percent. Most of them are to clean houses, sofas and mattresses, and cook family reunion dinners,” a manager with the household service app Daowei said.

“Although the supply of domestic helpers has increased by 20-30 percent compared with the same period last year, the industry still faces a shortage of labor,” a manager surnamed Xiao with a housekeeping service platform said.

Due to more demand, housekeeping service fees have surged by 40 percent. Wu Cuiying, a domestic helper, told Shenzhen Economic Daily that her income now is double her normal because of the increased service hours.
