TWO individuals and four groups from Shenzhen were awarded for their outstanding contributions to China’s poverty alleviation cause at a gathering held in Beijing on Thursday.

Chen Shaohong of the Luohu sub-bureau of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau and Wang Ganlu of the Shenzhen Bao’an People’s Hospital (Group) were hailed as outstanding individuals in poverty eradication.

Chen and Wang serve temporary positions as deputy head of the Kashgar Municipal Public Security Bureau in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and as president of the Chayu County People’s Hospital in the Tibet Autonomous Region, respectively.

Four Shenzhen units — the Second Poverty Alleviation Cooperation Working Group of Guangdong Province, Shenzhen Agricultural Products Group Co. Ltd., Evergrande Group and the Poverty Alleviation Working Group of Shenzhen Federation of Trade Unions — were honored.

During his tenure as deputy head of Kashgar’s public security bureau since 2017, Chen has helped 25 major companies, such as China Resources Vanguard and Pagoda, launch business projects and 17 aid projects in Kashgar, attracting investment of nearly 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million).

Chen has also organized more than 800 vocational training sessions in the countryside and helped more than 6,000 local residents secure jobs. In the critical period of pandemic prevention and control, Chen raised nearly 10 million yuan worth of relief goods through multiple channels to facilitate the resumption of work and production in Kashgar.

“On the road to poverty alleviation, we shall not leave one poverty-stricken family or person behind” — this is Chen’s quote in terms of lifting people out of poverty.

“I am very excited to receive the award, which not only represents my personal honor, but the collective honor of 42 medical workers from Shenzhen Bao’an People’s Hospital (Group) who were dispatched to Chayu County People’s Hospital of Linzhi City in batches,” said Wang.

“We have overcome many difficulties and created one miracle after another in the Chayu hospital, and this embodies the spirit of the Shenzhen people,” Wang added.

According to Wang, under their unremitting efforts, the Chayu hospital has transformed to a role model in Tibet’s county-level public hospital reform. The hospital used to be a health service center once ranked at the bottom in Linzhi on account of poor medical service.

They have also initiated a new telemedicine model with the investment of medical facilities, equipment and manpower as well as the utilization of “5G+Internet” in their assistance to the Chayu hospital.

Over the past 30 years, Shenzhen has offered assistance to 109 counties and districts in 17 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in the country’s fight against poverty, with financial aid exceeding 44 billion yuan.
