Colombian midfielder Quintero joins SZ FC
    2021-03-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

CHINESE Super League (CSL) side Shenzhen FC announced the signing of Colombian player Juan Fernando Quintero yesterday.

Born in 1993, Quintero started his career with Colombian professional soccer team Envigado.

In July 2013, he joined the Primeira Liga team Porto. During his time in Porto, he played 64 matches, contributed seven goals and 11 assists, and helped the team win the Portuguese Super Cup in 2014.

In 2017, Quintero returned to South America and began playing for Argentine club River Plate in 2018. He played 60 matches in three seasons, contributing 10 goals and seven assists, helping the team win the 2018 Copa Libertadores, the 2019 South American Super Cup, and the 2019 Argentine Cup.

Quintero has excellent footwork and is skilled at dribbling, set-piece assists, key passes, and long shots. He will improve the offense and defense capabilities of the team, according to the club’s announcement.

He also won a place in Colombia’s squad for the 2018 World Cup. Once on the global stage, Quintero proved his worth by slotting a beautiful free kick under a Japanese wall and bringing the 10 men level, even though Colombia would eventually fall 2-1 in its first game.

Quintero scored a critical goal to help River past Independiente in the Copa quarterfinal, and after they eliminated Gremio in dramatic fashion, the unthinkable had become a reality — Boca Juniors and River Plate would go head to head for the title of South American champion for the first time.

The tie was closely fought for 210 minutes, but with 12 minutes remaining in Madrid, Quintero managed to score the key goal from the edge of the area and tip the balance decisively in River’s favor.

Many argue it was the most important goal in the history of club soccer.(SD-Xinhua)
