China takes lead in ratifying RCEP deal

CHINA has taken the lead in ratifying the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Monday.

All members of the RCEP are planning to ratify the agreement before the end of this year and push for it to become effective Jan. 1, 2022, MOC official Yu Benlin said. With the ratification by at least six member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and three Non-ASEAN members, the agreement will be effective among these countries, Yu said, adding that Thailand has also ratified the agreement. The ministry and other related authorities have arranged a total of 701 binding obligations involving China under the RCEP, Yu said.

Tencent, Warner Music to start new record label

TENCENT Music Entertainment Group will create a joint venture record label with Warner Music in China, after Monday reporting better-than-expected revenue in the fourth quarter.

The Chinese music streaming platform also signed an extended multi-year licensing agreement with the U.S. music label. The deal can help Tencent, which owns a stake in Universal Music Group, add more exclusive content.

JD.com to invest US$800m in Dada Group

CHINA’S JD.com will invest US$800 million in on-demand delivery platform Dada Group, following which the e-commerce firm will own about 51 percent of Dada.

The investment comes at a time when JD.com is spinning off its logistics business, the in-house delivery network that gave it competitive advantage over larger rival Alibaba Group. JD had merged its online-to-offline unit, JD Daojia, with Dada in 2016. Dada-JD Daojia, an online grocery and delivery firm, then in 2018 raised US$500 million from Walmart Inc. and JD.

Kuaishou launches copyright clearance standards

KUAISHOU, a leading short-video platform in China, announced Monday its copyright clearance standards for music used in the platform’s livestreaming.

The firm has separate clearance channels for composers, lyricists and newly-added independent musicians. It is the first time that China’s online platforms have created music copyright settlement standards applying to both short videos and livestreaming. The settlement standard does not require the copyright holder to grant an exclusive license to Kuaishou.
