Mongolian songs and dances by Wulanmuqi
    2021-03-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

The Wulanmuqi Art Troupe from North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region will perform a night of folk songs and dances at Guangming Culture and Art Center on April 9.

“Wulanmuqi” or “Ulaan Mochir” means “red bud” in Mongolian. The art troupe was formed in 1957 with the purpose of enriching the herdsmen’s monotonic life with rare books, performances and movies. They participate in performances and cultural activities for local people in front of their yurts and have earned the reputation as the “light cavalry on the grassland.”

Over the past 60 years, Wulanmuqi, hailing from the vast grasslands, has grown from a team of nine people on a carriage at the beginning of its establishment to today’s 75 teams with more than 3,000 members. It has given countless performances to farmers, herders and people of all ethnic groups. They have been rooted in the masses for a long time, insisting that their songs and dances be sent to the remote regions, and they aspire to become “a banner of the national literary front.”

Whether riding a horse carriage or even going to the countryside on foot, as long as there is an audience member, they are willing to trek for a long distance. And over time and with age, their performances have gained more audience members. Its wholehearted service to the people is passed on from generation to generation.

On Nov. 21, 2017, Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote back to the Wulanmuqi artists in Sonid Right Banner under the administration of Xilin Gol League in Inner Mongolia, encouraging them to take root in the fertile soil of the grassland, promote cultural innovation and create more outstanding and down-to-earth artworks for the people.
