Police stop potential telecom fraud
    2021-04-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

RECENTLY, police successfully stopped a telecom fraud case involving 560,000 yuan (US$85,400), Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

Under the coordination of the Anti-Telecommunication Network Fraud Center (ATNFC) in Shenzhen, Nanshan and Futian police acted swiftly to help the woman.

ATNFC was set up by the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau in 2016. A mechanism linking the police, banks, telecom carriers and enterprises was established to tackle fast-growing telecom fraud scams better and faster.

At around 4 p.m. Friday, the center sent a telecom fraud warning. Upon receiving the order, the Futian police began an investigation immediately, narrowing victims down to a female surnamed Wang.

The police quickly dispatched several staffers to search for Wang, and finally located her at a hotel in Nanshan District, where she intended to make payments to fraudsters who posed as police officers and gave instructions remotely.

Under the instructions of ATNFC, police officers from Nanshan rushed to the hotel and patiently dissuaded Wang from transferring 560,000 yuan. She eventually calmed down and chose to believe the police officers.

On the evening of April 10, Wang made a phone call to ATNFC, expressing her appreciation for the police.

Wang recalled that the fraudsters knew her ID number, address, mobile phone number and other important personal information. They pretended to be government and police officers and accused her of money laundering. The fake police officer ordered Wang to uninstall WeChat, put her phone into Do Not Disturb mode, stay away from people and open a room in a hotel. She would have been required by the frausters to transfer money or download a virus-infected app if the police had not found her, police said.

If a Shenzhen resident has any clues to telecom fraud, he or she can dial 0755-81234567, reporting to ATNFC.  (Xia Yuanjie)
