Currently, the tap water in most places is not meant to be drindable if it is not boiled.

By 2025, the city will have a total of 30 water plants providing 8.44 million cubic meters of water a day. All the facilities are equipped with treatment devices to ensure water quality. So far, only five water plants in the city have the capability, offering 1.27 million cubic meters of water a day.

The city now is building and renovating a dozen of water plants and improve the water supply network, according to Yang Qun, a department chief with the Shenzhen Municipal Water Resources Bureau.

The city will complete upgrading the water supply pipelines by June next year.

The renovation and upgrading of the secondary water supply facilities at 2,900 housing complexes across the city will be completed before the end of 2022. So far, the renovation of water pumps and water cellars in 300 housing complexes have been completed.

Yantian District was the first district in the city that realized full coverage of potable tap water when the project was completed in April 2019.

The city government, district government and water resources group invested cumulatively 947 million yuan (US$144 million)) for the construction of a water supply main line, two water plants, renovation of 13.09 kilometers of old pipelines and water supply pipelines of 222 housing complexes.

By 2023, the potable tap water will cover the central areas of each district, according to the schedule of the water resources group. (Han Ximin)
