Ancient trees reinforced with support poles
    2021-04-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

PINGSHAN District took measures Monday to remedy three ancient trees planted by the river, completing the city's first case for remedying riverside ancient trees, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

Starting this spring, the Pingshan Administration of the Shenzhen Municipal Urban Planning and Natural Resources Bureau has taken measures to provide pest control and make remedies for 17 ancient and famous trees.

Three of the trees in Kengzi Subdistrict are planted by the Tiankengshui River. Their main trunks stretch across the river. The crowns' centers of gravity have deviated to their branches which would pose a risk for the trees to fall down after downpours or in typhoons.

After being evaluated, they needed to be reinforced by support poles.

On Monday, remedy work on the trees has finished by the joint effort by the Pingshan administration and the Pingshan District Water Authority.

The three trees date back to the Qing Dynasty. One of them is 130 years old and the other two are 210 years old.

The majority of the 150 ancient and famous trees in Pingshan are widely distributed across its six subdistricts, according to a Shenzhen Daily report last December.

Pingshan check the health of the 150 trees last year and has made a five-year healthcare plan for the trees. The district has archived basic and health data about each tree, which will provide guidance to implement follow-up repair and conservation work for them.

In terms of the classification of the ancient trees, there is one second-class ancient tree over 350 years old, 13 third-class ancient trees over 200 years old and 136 third-class ancient trees over 100 years old.

Kengzi Subdistrict has the most ancient trees in Pingshan, with 45 ancient trees flourishing in the subdistrict, including the district’s oldest tree.
