GUANGDONG authorities announced yesterday that Taiwan residents living in the province are now included in the province’s vaccination program. It means Taiwan compatriots are now eligible for COVID-19 jabs on a voluntary basis in Guangdong and receive the same treatment as their mainland counterparts.

Taiwan compatriots who are willing to be inoculated will be able to make reservations via the WeChat miniprogram “粤健通” soon. The service’s official launch date will be announced later, according to the authorities.

To get vaccinated for free, Taiwan residents must provide either their mainland residence permits issued by public security authorities or proof of enrollment in the mainland medical insurance program.

Once booked successfully, the applicants can get vaccinated at the designated time and site.

Taiwan residents without mainland residence permits or are not covered by the mainland medical insurance program can submit an application to the Taiwan affairs office at or above the county level in their place of residence. The office will then organize the group to receive the vaccine shots in designated sites, according to the authorities.

Teachers and students from Taiwan working or studying in Guangdong are also included in the province’s vaccination program and will enjoy the same policy as their mainland peers.

Vaccine recipients are reminded to cooperate with staff at the vaccination site to complete prescribed procedures and sign both a form of informed consent and a statement of bearing personal responsibility for all risks associated with the vaccine before taking the doses.

Those who get a shot are required to stay at the vaccination site for 30 minutes for observation, pay close attention to their health status within 14 days of inoculation and go to a hospital promptly in case of any adverse reaction.

Shenzhen started vaccinating foreigners as well as Hong Kong and Macao residents living in Guangdong on April 13 on a voluntary basis. The service was suspended over the weekend when the city switched to its own immunization information system after the provincial system was criticized for inconveniences. Starting from 8 a.m. tomorrow, the system will begin accepting COVID-19 vaccine reservations for foreigners and Hong Kong and Macao residents.
