Young talents thrive in ‘City of Innovation’
    2021-04-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN is known to the world as a “City of Innovation,” “City of International Makers” and “Paradise of Hardware,” attracting countless young talents to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys in the city where mass entrepreneurship and innovation campaign run full steam ahead, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

Huang Bufu, a Hong Kong maker who started a business in Shenzhen, is a member of the rising group of entrepreneurs in Shenzhen.

Six years ago, Huang chose Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei as the first stop for his startup business. He founded and served as CEO of eSight Technology Co. Ltd., which specializes in the R&D and industrialization of industrial visual intelligence technology.

“I have visited different places. Huaqiangbei is a paradise in the field of hardware and intelligent manufacturing. If you need a part, you can easily get it by going to the market downstairs,” Huang was quoted as saying.

Before he started his business, Huang studied for a doctorate in mechanical automation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003.

In 2014, Huang perceived that the time was ripe for him to start a business, as he noticed that the Pearl River Delta, an important manufacturing hub in China, began to promote the use of mechanical arms on a large scale.

After more than a year of preparation, Huang and his classmate Shi Xi, who studied visual system control, set up a company in Shenzhen at the end of 2015.

Likewise, Huang Yuanhao, who had completed his postdoctoral research at MIT’s research center SMART, founded his company Orbbec in Shenzhen in early 2013. The company is committed to the R&D of 3D vision and artificial intelligence (AI).

In November 2015, Orbbec completed the mass production and sales of 3D sensors, becoming the fourth company in the world that can mass-produce consumer-grade 3D sensors following Apple, Microsoft and Intel.

The company has also been leading the way in realizing the mass application of 3D facial recognition and facial recognition payments on Android phones.

“This [Shenzhen] is a place that will not disappoint hard workers,” said Niu Xinyu, founder and CEO of Corerain Technologies Co. Ltd. Niu returned to China in early 2016 after receiving a doctorate from Imperial College London.

So far, the self-developed high-performance AI chips Corerain produces have been applied in many fields such as smart city, intelligent manufacturing and autonomous driving. The company also has strategic cooperation deals with industry giants including Intel, Inspur and Dell. (Zhang Yu)
