YE XIAOGANG, a prominent contemporary Chinese composer, was officially appointed as the dean of School of Music, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-SZ) at a ceremony held Thursday at CUHK-SZ in Longgang District.

The school is also known as the Shenzhen Conservatory of Music.

The music school will also welcome its first batch of undergraduate students this fall, according to information released at the ceremony.

As one of Shenzhen’s 10 new cultural facilities, the school is designed to be an international, innovative and world-class music and art school.

Xu Yangsheng, CUHK-SZ president, presented Ye a letter of appointment at the ceremony. Xu said that CUHK-SZ is honored to build the city’s music school.

Ye said at the ceremony that the school’s preparation work is ongoing. As planned, the enrollment this year will be held in Guangdong Province for music performance majors.

The number of the school’s students is expected to reach 1,000 by 2030.

It is said that classes will be conducted in both Chinese and English. At the same time, the school will provide classes in other languages such as Italian, German and French to expand students’ international vision.

The music school’s official campus will be located in Longgang International University Town, housing 700 theaters, 500 concert halls and 200 rehearsal halls.

Ye, who studied at the Central Conservatory of Music from 1978 to 1983, is also the president of China Musicians Association and once served as the director of the arts committee of Shenzhen Belt and Road International Music Festival.
