SHENZHEN ranked first among Chinese cities in terms of consumer spending on Mother’s Day, which was celebrated Sunday, followed by Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi’an and Suzhou, according to data released by e-commerce giant JD.com.

Flowers were the most popular gift consumers bought for Mother’s Day.

The number of the flowers ordered for this year’s Mother’s Day was six times that of Valentine’s Day, according to data published by ele.me., an online delivery platform.

In addition, according to JD.com’s statistics, keyword searches, including “Mother’s Day gifts”, “Sending mom gifts” and “Sending gifts to mother-in-law,” a week ahead of  Mother’s Day reached nearly a million, up 120 percent month on month.

The number of women who bought Mother’s Day gifts surpassed that of men. Nearly 50 percent of them are between 26 and 35 years old.

Beauty products, household appliances, food and drinks, jewelry and clothes are among the most popular Mother’s Day gifts.

Flower bouquets were the bestselling Mother’s Day gifts. Nearly 40 percent of men accounted for the orders. Moreover, around 80 percent of male consumers also asked for a greeting card to go with their flower bouquets.

In addition, about 60 percent of female consumers booked flower bouquets ahead of Mother’s Day. Many chose rose, carnation and “baby’s breath” for their Mother’s Day flower bouquets. Carnation is the official Mother’s Day flower.

However, according to JD.com’s survey, for mothers, the most memorable and unforgettable gifts received on this special day are self-made items by kids, such as handicrafts, portraits, cards, biscuits and flowers. (Wang Jingli)
