‘Spring Awakening’ to rock Pingshan
    2021-05-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A Chinese version of the Broadway musical “Spring Awakening” will be staged at Pingshan Grand Theater next weekend.

“Spring Awakening” is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the 1891 German play “Spring Awakening” by Frank Wedekind. Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical tells the story of a group of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumults of adolescent sexuality. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score.

After a number of workshops, concerts and rewrites over a seven-year period, “Spring Awakening” premiered Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2006. The show then opened on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theater in the same year and received favorable reviews. “Spring Awakening” received 11 Tony Award nominations in 2007, winning eight. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards. Decca Broadway released the original recording in 2006, which won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2008.
