Cruise returned his 3 Golden Globe awards to protest the HFPA
    2021-05-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

HOLLYWOOD star Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globe awards Monday to protest the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), according to Deadline.

Cruise, who won two best actor awards for “Jerry Maguire” and “Born on the Fourth of July,” and a best supporting actor award for “Magnolia,” is among several actors who have called on the industry to protest the HFPA over the group’s lack of diversity.

News of Cruise’s trophies being sent to the HFPA headquarters follows NBC’s Monday announcement that it would not air the Golden Globes in 2022.

Protests began earlier this year after the Los Angeles Times reported there were no Black members in the organization that hosts the awards.

Recently, Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia all announced it was boycotting the Globes and the HFPA until further notice due to its lack of diversity in its membership.

Cruise is not the only star calling out the Globes and the HFPA, which is in charge of handing out the awards. Over the weekend, five-time Globes nominee Scarlett Johansson issued a statement urging the film industry to “step back” from the HFPA. (SD-Agencies)
