City political advisers focus on education
    2021-05-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SOME local political advisers, focusing on the issue of education, have brought related proposals to the First Session of the Seventh Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which started Thursday.

This year, an increasing number of CPPCC members have expressed their concerns about the new challenges children face in the digital era. They expressed their thoughts and suggestions alongside reports from Shenzhen Evening News about artificial intelligence (AI), online teaching and the public welfare system.

Huang Dinglong, a political adviser working in the AI industry, suggested incorporating AI into primary school education.

“It is important to introduce AI educational concepts into our basic education system. In the future, our children are likely to compete with machines and work with them,” said Huang.

He also cited two AI-based education examples. One was the application of AI technology to oral English tests. The other was an assessment and correction of students’ hands-on skills through the use of AI.

“We need to strengthen technical training for teachers and provide them with AI equipment. Only the teachers who excel in using AI technology can help students learn AI,” Huang said.

Jiang Hua paid more attention to the impact of online teaching upon teenagers and children. Jiang said, “Nowadays, online education applications (apps) are mushrooming in the market. However, to guarantee the quality of the content that the apps spread and regulate their business models is essential. Education cannot be driven by making profits.”

Pan Zhengyan, who has been focusing on children and teenager development for years, called for establishing a children social welfare system in Shenzhen. The system would consist of education, protection and health care for children.

Pan suggested an agency be established to coordinate responsibilities that are currently shared by various government agencies and public institutions, including the police, the health work department, civil affairs bureau, disabled persons’ federation and women’s federation.
