素鸡
    2021-05-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

“素” means “vegetarian,” and “鸡” means “chicken.” Originally a traditional soy-based Chinese vegetarian food which mimics chicken in flavor and texture, this term is now used jokingly by netizens to refer to certain children. “素” is short for “素质教育” (sùzhì jiàoyù, meaning “esse2ntial-qualities-oriented schooling”), and “鸡” is short for “打鸡血” (dǎjīxuè, meaning “to overexert”). In China, the concept of essential-qualities-oriented schooling has often been simplified as giving children a lot of extracurricular activities and extra trainings in sports and art. Therefore, this term refers to the children who are adept at various forms of sports, music and art, some quite uncommon, such as figure skating and ice hockey. These children are often from wealthy families, since courses in these subjects are pricey.

Example:

A: 你们班最酷的小孩是谁?

Nǐmen bān zuì kù de xiǎohái shì shuí?

Who’s the coolest kid in your class?

B: 杰克吧。他除了游泳、网球、钢琴、小号,还学了花样滑冰和马术。

Jiékè ba。Tā chúle yóuyǒng、wǎngqiú、gāngqín、xiǎohào,hái xué le huāyàng huábīng hé mǎshù。

Perhaps Jack. He’s learning figure skating and equestrianism in addition to swimming, tennis, piano and trumpet.

A: 这孩子真是一枚素鸡。

Zhè háizi zhēn shì yīméi sùjī。

That kid is really versatile in sports and music.
