Walmart probed for expired beers
    2021-05-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Shenzhen market supervision bureau has opened an investigation into Walmart China after it was found the manufacture and expiration dates on the cans of a pack of imported beer a customer purchased from a Walmart outlet in Shenzhen had been altered.

In an investigative report released by the Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervision and Management Bureau on its Weibo account Wednesday, the authorities confirmed the tip-off from a consumer, dated May 6. The consumer suspected the manufacture and expiration dates of a four-can pack from Kalnapilis, a Lithuanian brewery, that he bought at a Walmart outlet, had been changed on. The pack was sold at 19.8 yuan (US$3), and the package for the can indicated Oct. 5, 2020 as manufacture date and  Oct. 5, 2021 as expiration date. Yet, the original data at the lower part of the can, which had been erased, indicated the manufacture date was May 5, 2020 with expiration on May 5, 2021.

The bureau required Walmart China to provide the documents of the imported beer and asked the whistleblower to submit proof. On May 11, Walmart China submitted the materials, including customs clearance and quarantine certificates for the imported products, which showed the manufacture date of the beer was Oct. 5, 2020.

After media outlets published the allegations on May 12, the bureau looked into the beers involved, a video clip and purchase receipt provided by the whistleblower and determined that the allegations were true.

Walmart has ordered its outlets across China to pull the beer off the shelves, and required the outlets to count the amount of beers whose dates had been modified. On May 14, the company ordered the outlets to recall all the beers involved.

In the following inspection, the city’s market supervision bureau hasn’t, so far, found any such products being sold.

The case is under further investigation. (Han Ximin)
