Lewandowski breaks scoring record
    2021-05-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI scored his 41st goal of the campaign in Bayern’s 5-2 victory over Augsburg to break Gerd Muller’s single-season scoring record from 1971/72, while Werder Bremen was relegated into the second division after losing 4-2 to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga’s final round of games Saturday.

After equaling Muller’s long-standing record last Saturday, all eyes were once again on Lewandowski, who was on his hunt for a new record from the starting whistle.

The record German champions needed only nine minutes to break the deadlock with great assistance from Augsburg’s Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, who accidentally cleared Serge Gnabry’s dangerous square pass into the wrong goal with just nine minutes played.

Although Bayern had nothing more to prove after clinching its ninth consecutive Bundesliga title two weeks ago, the champions continued on the front foot and made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute when Gnabry headed home after Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman missed from close range.

Augsburg had a golden chance to halve the deficit moments later, but Daniel Caligiuri failed to beat Bayern custodian Manuel Neuer from the penalty spot. Bayern punished Augsburg’s wastefulness in the 33rd minute as Joshua Kimmich unleashed a hammer from 23 meters into the top corner to make it 3-0. (Xinhua)
