Lumiere Pavilions’ two IMAX cinemas in Shekou and Huaqiangbei will screen Finnish screenwriter and film director Aki Olavi Kaurismäki’s movies. Kaurismäki is best known for the award-winning movies “Drifting Clouds,” “The Man Without a Past” and “The Other Side of Hope.” He excels at a distinctive and effortless mix of scalpel-sharp comedy and spare, pitch-perfect visual storytelling. ‘Drifting Clouds’ (1996) Tram driver Lauri loses his job. Shortly thereafter, the restaurant where his wife works as a head waitress is closed. Too proud to receive money from the social welfare system, they strive to find new jobs. But they are completely unlucky and clumsy; one disaster is followed by the next. He revives but with no memory of his past or his identity. He rebuilds his life from scratch, but the past inevitably catches up with him. Time: 2 p.m., June 5 Venue: Lumiere in Shekou ‘I Hired a Contract Killer’ (1990) After 15 years’ service, Henri Boulanger’s job becomes redundant and he is dismissed. Shocked, he attempts suicide, but can’t go through with it, so he hires a contract killer in a seedy bar to murder him at some unspecified time in the future. But almost immediately he meets and falls in love with Margaret, a flower seller, which makes Boulanger realize that his life has some meaning after all. But when he goes back to the bar to cancel the contract, he finds it has been demolished and there’s no way he can get in touch with the killer. Time: 2 p.m., June 6 Venue: Lumiere in Shekou ‘Shadows in Paradise’ (1986) Lonely garbage man Nikkander finds himself directionless after losing his friend and co-worker to a sudden heart attack. Unlikely redemption comes in the form of plain supermarket cashier Ilona, with whom he begins a tentative love affair.
