GBA first choice for HK youths’ career development

FIFTY Hong Kong graduates, from 28 different universities, have landed jobs at Mission Hills Group in Shenzhen this year, as part of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) Youth Employment Scheme launched by Hong Kong  Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

The plan is one of the measures announced by Lam in her 2020 Policy Address. It aims to encourage and support young people from Hong Kong to work and pursue their careers in mainland cities of the GBA, help them understand the latest development in those cities, and teach them how to leverage the opportunities for career advancement in the area.

Lam said earlier, at a youth forum, as of April 30, a total of 2,394 jobs had been provided under the plan, which was more than expected.

Alex Leung, a graduate from the Open University of Hong Kong, has worked at Mission Hills Shenzhen Resort for two weeks. He said his work mainly involves hotel reception and golf events.

“I majored in sports management, which matches the industrial chain of Mission Hills very well. I applied for the job as soon as I had learned about the plan and the recruitment offer from Mission Hills.”

Leung said he is impressed by the rapid development of mainland cities. “I come to the mainland once or twice a year,” he said. “And every time the feeling changes. The sports industry in Shenzhen and Haikou is very large and diversified, which means there are a lot of job opportunities.”

When it comes to career planning, Leung said that the GBA is bound to be the first choice for his career development.

“I’ve also talked with my friends in Hong Kong,” he added. “They didn’t expect so many good canteens and dormitories here. The overall income is a little bit higher than it is in Hong Kong.”

Leung said he was very lucky to have been given this opportunity.

“Everything has been affected by the pandemic and it is very difficult for Hong Kong graduates to find a good job now. Many of my Hong Kong friends are still trying to do part-time and temporary jobs. In fact, there are many opportunities here. It depends on whether they are willing to jump out of the original circle.”

Selina Hung, a health education major graduate from the Education University of Hong Kong, is  working in the Mission Hills SPA health-care center.

“Many of my family members have started businesses or worked on the mainland, and they always talk about the development opportunities of the GBA,” she said. “So, I came here. My colleagues are very friendly. There is not so much sense of distance here.”

Dr. Ken Chu, chairman of Mission Hills Group, said for many young people in Hong Kong, it is their first choice for career development to catch the high-speed train of the mainland development as soon as possible.

“Before achieving this goal, we should let them better understand our motherland, stimulate their sense of identity and patriotic enthusiasm, and realize the great significance of the construction of the GBA. This is what we are doing at Mission Hills,” he pronounced.
