Generation Z more willing to pay for Web novels
    2021-06-04  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

GENERATION Z, Gen Z, or those born from the mid-to-late 1990s to the early 2010s, have gradually become the major writers and consumers of Web novels, according to Shenzhen Economic Daily.

Gu Shan, born in 1997, said in an interview with the Daily on Tuesday, “I am in the habit of both reading and creating Web novels.”

He first encountered Web novels at the age of 7. Since then, he has continued to tip Web writers and communicate with them. After his graduation in 2018, he became a part-time writer on the Internet.

However, despite his passion and the efforts he put into the field, his creative career took a hit. Yet, his friends encouraged him to continue, and he became a Web fiction critic with over 50,000 subscribers on Bilibili, a video-streaming platform.

“The advantage that Web novels have over many other publishing methods is that writers can figure out their mistakes and mend the story’s loopholes through their interactions with their readers. Therefore, avoiding any collapse of the plot,” Gu said.

According to a report from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the levels of high interactivity in Gen Z is accompanied by higher user engagement and willingness to pay.

Zhou Xingjie, a professor of Guizhou University of Finance and Economics, explained how the enormous financial firepower Gen Z holds, alongside their high standards, improves the quality of works of Web fiction.

In relation to a report issued by En Data, Gen Z has been the major consumers of Web novels with average monthly consumption of 77 yuan (US$12).

Some 76.6 percent of female readers are willing to pay for Web novels, more than the percentage of male readers. Moreover, 80 percent of Gen Z is eager to pay for other services related to Web novels, according to the report.

Sun Tao, a youth literature critic, said that Gen Z tends to consider their own level of interest before even thinking about the price. Once a writer or a work becomes their “idol,” their desire to pay for it will be strengthened.

Mobile games based on famous Web novels are attractive to fiction fans, 80 percent of which are willing to pay for the game.

“Clicking, subscribing, tipping, and paying have become the new normal. The fan effect of Web novel looms initially,” said Sun.

Meanwhile, more and more young people are diving into the world of Web writing.
