Outdoor activities ‘helpful in preventing myopia’
    2021-06-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reminding children and adolescents to spend two hours outdoors every day, maintain good posture while studying, use proper lighting and reduce time using electronic products as part of the effforts to prevent near-sightedness, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

The appeal was made ahead of the 26th National Eye Health Day, which fell on yesterday. The theme of this year’s National Eye Health Day is “Raising awareness for general eye health care.”

Myopic children and adolescents accounted for 50.2 percent of the country’s total number of myopic people in 2019, according to data from the Ministry of Education and National Health Commission.

Younger children are at greater risk of developing high myopia, and so people should pay more attention to protecting pre-school children’s eyes from potential sources of damage, according to experts from the Shenzhen CDC.

The experts stated that an increase in time spent outdoors is the most efficient approach for myopia prevention and control. Children and adolescents are advised to have more outdoor activities, such as walking to school, and to stay outdoors during weekends and vacations for more time. Outdoor time should be more than two hours for children and adolescents, and more than three hours for pre-school kids.

Secondly, young students are suggested to keep good posture when reading and writing. To reduce eye strain, primary and secondary school students need to rest their eyes about 10 minutes after every 20 minutes of near-vision work. Pre-school students should look away about 10 minutes after short-distance eye use for about 15-20 minutes. Adequate lighting while reading and working is also important for vision. Too dark or too bright an environment is harmful for the eyes.

When using electronic products for learning purpose, it is best to choose projectors, TVs, computers and other electronics with big screens. Higher screen resolution is more beneficial for vision, the experts said. The primary and secondary students should not spend over 15 minutes using electronics and should, in total, spend no more than one hour a day. Pre-school kids should avoid using those products altogether.

Once a child’s eyesight begins to show signs of damage, they need to have their eyesight tested to slow down myopia development as soon as possible. (Xia Yuanjie)
