Chinese artist Li Binyuan is exhibiting his latest video recording his performance art at a solo exhibition at the Mangrove Gallery. Titled “Blocking,” the 16-minute video records the naked Li using his body to resist a cascading waterfall in his hometown of Yongzhou, Hunan Province in 2019 and 2021. In May, when Li performed for the fifth time in the waterfall, he fell in an accident and broke a lumbar vertebra and a rib. Born in 1985, Li graduated from the Department of Sculpture of Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2011. He has since gone on to disturb, inspire, amuse and challenge urban life, and the social restrictions attached, using an inventive and highly personalized artistic method. Fusing the technical aspects of video art with more avant-garde behavior art and modern sculpture methods, Li has created a distinct style to express his ideas. His work ranges from video art and live action pieces to sculpture. The artist uses a combination of his body and surroundings to create pieces. He explores urban and rural spaces, from the very public context of the street, to natural sites, and remote post-industrial locations. Rearticulating social conduct while interrogating our everyday experiences, Li is sometimes running naked through the streets, crashing into trees and using hammers to destroy other hammers. These interventions disrupt existing societal conventions, interrupting both the spatial and social dynamics of contemporary life.
