CRISTIANO RONALDO was on the scoresheet as European champion Portugal beat Israel 4-0 Wednesday in its final warmup for the defense of its title. Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes bagged twice as Ronaldo and Joao Cancelo added for a comfortable win in Lisbon. Ronaldo’s 44th minute strike was his 104th international goal in 175 matches, and leaves him five short of the record held by Iran’s Ali Daei. “We put things right from the match against Spain,” Portugal coach Fernando Santos said regarding the 0-0 draw with Spain in their previous match in Madrid. “I know what we have to do to win, and I have great confidence in this team,” he said. Portugal is in the tricky looking Group F at the Euros with Hungary its first opponent June 15 before the side takes on Germany four days later and then the reigning World Cup holder France June 23. Having drawn with Spain in its other pre-Euros friendly, the defending champion goes into the tournament on fine form and allowed Israel only one shot on target in Lisbon. Portugal boss Fernando Santos insisted there is still much to work on for his side with the tactical setup around Ronaldo an issue. He stated: “In the second half I changed things a little, I tried to put one more man next to Ronaldo and two midfielders coming in from the inside, but it didn’t work. We started to miss a lot of passes and the ball circulation was not so good. There are many things to improve.” Fernandes said after the match: “All the teams are difficult, at a Euros they will all be good. There is always a group that makes a difference, we have to find it in us.”(SD-Agencies) |
