Psychologist advises mental adjustment after gaokao
    2021-06-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WU SU’E, a psychology teacher in Longhua Middle School, highly recommended that students lay down their mental troubles and pay more attention to the real world after the National College Entrance Exam, also known as gaokao, according to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily.

Gaokao ends the period of strong pressure which students have a hard time getting over. Wu said that students should relax themselves but unhealthy forms of entertainment like spending all night using electronics are improper.

The thought that students have completed their mission once gaokao ends causes overindulgence.

Without homework and class schedule, students need to schedule their own time for independent living, according to Wu.

To deal with nervousness before gaokao scores are released, students should pay more attention to their real life. More social activities can make up for this uncertainty.

It is reported that acts like checking answers will aggravate students’ psychological burden and may result in insomnia.

“Clinical trials have shown that the more depressed people are, the more uncontrollable their thoughts become. Students should shift their attention and focus on interpersonal relationships,” said Wu.

Meanwhile, Wu advised that students could learn about college majors in advance.

Parents have a duty to explore interests with their kids and build their confidence and have them gain more independence. A family trip led by kids will offer them great skills to live independently.

Wu also suggested that parents are supposed to treat gaokao scores rationally and avoid generating negative emotions. For parents, being a good listener can alleviate the pressure of their kids.

If these methods cannot relieve students’ high stress, they should seek help from psychologists. (Hu Leyi)
